Description
Abu Al Abyad Island in Abu Dhabi is well-known for its role in marine aquaculture and hatchery practices. The hatchery techniques for marine fishes and shrimps on this island align with modern aquaculture methods, emphasizing sustainability and environmental conservation.
Aquaculture has been identified as a priority sector for development in the UAE. However, one of the main challenges in the sector is the limited research and pilot scale studies specific to the environment of Abu Dhabi and the UAE in general. The Aquaculture and Marine Studies Center (AMSC), established on the island of Abu Al Abyad, aims at filling this information gap. In addition to generating research and technical data the center is entrusted with the challenging task of producing marine fish and shrimp seed under controlled environmental conditions and releasing them in the surrounding waters of Abu Al Abyad Island. The overall goal of the project is to maintain and augment the natural stocks of fish and shrimp in the surrounding waters of Abu Al Abyad Island and the neighboring areas. The main project activities are selection of brooders and their management, spawning, larval rearing, postlarval rearing and sea ranching.
As the title indicates, this book is intended as a practical guide to production of seed of marine finfishes and shrimps. Its contents are largely a synthesis of the practical experience of the technical staff of the AMSC, blended with their observations of the work of others in this field. Some information has also been drawn liberally from published literature.
The book comprises three chapters; the first two chapters of the manual attempt to address, in an easy and simple way, the biology, broodstock management and various hatchery techniques of marine finfishes and shrimps raised at the AMSC, Abu Al Abyad Island. In the third chapter, the various methods of producing live food necessary for the larval stages of the fishes and shrimps are described.
